The invention relates to a method and a device for cropping wire coils between a loop layer and a downender in the region of the coil transporter and is used in wire rolling mills. The object on which the invention is based is to use and design a cropping device in such a way in terms of the method employed that only one cropping device per coil transporter, with a short time of engagement for each cropping operation, is required. The solution to the problem is explained in terms of the method employed in Claim 1 and is achieved, in terms of construction, in Claims 2-5 such that a tool plate fixed by means of guide bars holds a cutting device consisting of one or two shears with specially designed blade levers. <IMAGE>
