The present invention relates to a safety switching device for a hand-held electrical appliance, which safety switching device effectively prevents inadvertent operation of the switching knob (6) for switching the appliance on. Assigned to a switch (3) which is arranged in the electrical appliance is a switching element (5) having a switching knob (6) which interacts with a locking element (9). The locking element (9) has locking catches (15, 16) which engage, in the switching element (5), in engagement regions (20, 21) having contact surfaces (25, 26) and having recesses (22, 23) which are constructed as a catch. When the switching knob (6) is in the switched-off position, the switching element (5) is blocked by the locking catches (15, 16). According to the invention, for simple handling, the switching knob (6) is in this case constructed on the top (28) of the handle, and the unlocking knob (8) is constructed on the bottom (29) of the handle. <IMAGE>
