A method and a device for the supercharging of an internal combustion engine of the piston type are described, in which the unrestricted inlet of combustion gas into the combustion chamber is delayed in relation to the start of the intake stroke of the piston, in order to obtain a dynamic supercharging effect. Before the start of the unrestricted inlet sequence, a partially restricted inlet phase is provided, during which a partially restricted inlet of the combustion gas into the combustion chamber is controlled.
