In order to achieve a variable dynamic range in the reproduction of a single-channel or multiple-channel digital, block-by-block-coded audio signal at low cost, the scaling factors separated from the audio signal are modified prior to their use for level control according to dynamic requirements. The scaling factors in each case classify the peak value of the digital sample values within a specific time interval (block) and control block-by-block the level of the digital audio signal to be reproduced.
