PURPOSE:To provide a method of drive control and a drive controller that can largely mitigate the burden on a driver by automatically adjusting the driving speed of a vehicle even on a jammed road with heavy traffic and many signals. CONSTITUTION:The image of a foregoing automobile as provided by a TV camera 2 is sent to an image processor 3 provided with a neural network, and the silhouette of the foregoing car and the probability of the silhouette are displayed on a liquid crystal screen 4. When an automatic following mode is selected by a driver according to the content of the display, an engine 6 and a brake 8 are automatically operated, and drive control is thus carried out by adjusting the running speed so that the silhouette of the foregoing car almost matches with the probability of the silhouette.
