PURPOSE:To easily obtain in high yield the subject compound useful for perfumes or as a raw material therefor, by hydrogenolysis of a cyclic ketal in the presence of a palladium-contg. catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula II (R8 and R9 are such that one of them is H, the other being 1-4C alkyl) can be obtained by hydrogenolysis of a cyclic ketal of formula I (R1R7 are each H or 1-4C alkyl) pref. under a hydrogen pressure of 1-150atm at 50-300 deg.C in the presence of a catalyst containing 50-100wt.% of palladium (pref. >=50wt.% of palladium and <=50wt.% of at least one kind of element selected from ruthenium, rhodium, platinum and nickel) and carried on a carrier such as alumina or silica. It is preferable that the amount of the catalyst to be used be 0.005-20wt.% based on the cyclic ketal. |
