SILICON NITRIDE-BASED COMPOSITE CERAMICS

PURPOSE:To provide ceramics, having a high fracture toughness value and fracture resistance and capable of holding a high strength even at high temperatures. CONSTITUTION:The silicon nitride-based composite ceramics comprise silicon nitride, silicon carbide whiskers and silicon carbide platy grains. The amounts of both the blended silicon carbide whiskers and the silicon carbide platy grains are <30wt.% based on the whole sintered compact. The ceramics are produced by preparing a precompact and then hot press sintering the precompact at a temperature within the range of 1800-2000 deg.C in a pressurized N2 atmosphere.
