PURPOSE:To prepare the subject agent which does not adversely affect a catalyst for cleaning waste gas and to provide a process for its preparation. CONSTITUTION:The objective agent comprises a mixture of sulfurized alkaline earth metal salts of a hydroxybenzoic acid having a 4-6C aliphatic hydrocarbon side chain and a phenol having a similar side chain. This agent is prepared by reacting a reactant mixture comprising this phenol, a dihydric alcohol and 0.99g.eq. or below, per g.eq. of the phenol of an alkaline earth metal reagent and distilling off the water and unreacted dihydric alcohol to a content of 0.6mol or below per mol of the alkaline earth metal reagent, reacting the product with carbon dioxide, and reacting the obtained product with 0.1-4.0mol, per mol of the reagent, elementary sulfur. Thus, a salicylate/phenate type extreme-pressure cleaning agent which can show extreme-pressure performances at least equivalent to those of the conventional ZnDTp or phosphorus-containing extreme-pressure additives though it contains no phosphorus can be obtained. |
