PURPOSE:To provide a user with the standard of the reliability of the display of a present position anti to enhance the accuracy of the display of a position. CONSTITUTION:A matching operation is performed by using a method wherein pieces of running data captured in a wide region are collated with the pattern of the shape of quantized map data (4). The pieces of running data are sampled and weighted at a definite distance or time. The higher their reliability is on the basis of a judgment by a straight running operation or of error information from a sensor, they are weighted larger (5). Sampled data is collated with the pattern of the shape of map data, and a part which coincides most is retrieved. A retrieval area is decided in advance as a region in which a present position can exist on the basis of the sampled data and an error range (7).
