The device comprises two telescopic tubes (2, 3), the second (3) being capable of sliding inside the first (2), and a jack (4) fixed to the first tube (2) and to the second tube (3) towards the rear end (19) of the latter (3); the first tube (2) is mounted so that it can pivot with respect to a horizontal axle (14) fixed on the chassis of the vehicle, between an inactive position in which it is horizontal and a sampling position in which it is vertical and in which its distal end (12) is against the surface of the soil (23). A probe (5) is mounted at the front of a rotating shaft (6) whose rear (6a) is axially mounted in the second tube (3) and is driven in rotation by a motor (7) arranged towards the rear of the said second tube (3); thus, the first tube (2) being in the sampling position, the probe (5) is inside the first tube (2), the rod (9) of the jack (4) being emergent and penetrates into the ground (23) via the distal end (12) of the first tube (2), the rod (9) of the jack (4) returning into the body (8) of this tube. <IMAGE>
