PURPOSE:To reduce cross talk by controlling a variable gain amplifier circuit in repeating sampling and holding. CONSTITUTION:Clock signals C1 and C2 are generated from digital information recorded on an optical storage medium. The signal C1 is shown in a position shifted by a from +a position of a multiple of integer of T as a start point of T/2 from an end part of the digital information Di recorded as marks 83 or spaces 84 on the medium, and the position shifted by +a is shown as a leading edge and a trailing edge of the signal C1. The signal C2 is shown in a position shifted by-a. A signal inputted to a sample-and-hold circuit is sampled in timing of the leading and trailing edges of the signals C1 and C2. The gain of the variable gain amplifier circuit is controlled to make the numerical aperture of an eye pattern max. with the position of the signal to be sampled in timing St as shown in the figure as a signal detecting point. Cross talk is reduced by controlling the gain to be a max. based on a min. in difference between a larger signal and a smaller signal than a reference value.
