PURPOSE:To prevent the display surface from becoming musible in whichever direction an observer, who puts on polarizing spectacles, views by arranging a phase difference plate which has specific retardation and also has its optical axis in a specific direction in front of a front-side polarizing plate. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal display device is constituted by sandwiching a liquid crystal layer between two transparent substrates and arranging polarizing plates 2 and 3 outside the two transparent substrates and makes a display on one surface of the liquid crystal layer, and the phase difference plate 4 is arranged in front of the front-side polarizing plate 2 arranged on the display surface side of the liquid crystal layer. Then, the phase difference plate 4 is arranged having its optical axis at about 35-55 deg. to the axis of absorption of the front-side polarizing plate 2 and the retardation of the phase difference plate 4 is set to about 110-170nm. Consequently, elliptic polarized light which is close to circular polarized light is obtained in the entire wavelength range of visible light and the display can sufficiently be recognized in whichever direction the axes of absorption of the polarizing spectacles are set. |
