Method for detecting and selecting obstacles in danger of colliding with a following vehicle (1) using a horizontally scanning rangefinder (2), characterised in that the returned echoes from the scanning are processed so as to determine the size and movement of the obstacles detected in the field of the rangefinder and in that the expected trajectories of the following vehicle (1) and those of the detected obstacles are compared in order to select the most dangerous obstacle.
