The invention relates to horizontally connecting two sections constituting (forming) a safety rail (3) together. One of these sections is attached to a block on which one end of an inextensible cable (10) is anchored and the other section is attached to another block (6) carrying a slit frustoconical jaw (15) through which the cable passes. This jaw is normally pressed by a spring (16) in a direction in which it releases the cable and allows "breathing" of the rail and, in the other direction, in which it anchors the cable on the block, as soon as an impact tends to separate the two sections, a piston (20) attached to an extension (102) of the cable then becoming attached to a piston (21) which surrounds it because of the lack of fluidity of a pasty material filling this piston. <IMAGE>
