It is of the type consisting in spraying onto a substrate a powder whose constituents are of different kinds, the temperatures of spraying and of the substrate being such that a virtually immediate quenching of the constituents of the powder is produced upon impact on the substrate, so as to form a coating layer on the said substrate, and is characterised in that it consists in subjecting the substrate and the said layer to a heat treatment in which at least one of the constituents of the powder is brought to a molten or liquid state.
