PURPOSE:To reduce the generating time of high voltage pulse at necessary minimum while ensuring restartability, and improve safety. CONSTITUTION:A discharge lamp lighting device is provided with a first timer means 7 for measuring the lighting time of a high luminance discharge lamp 3; a converting means 8 for converting the measured lighting time into a pulse waiting time TW according to a preset fixed conversion ratio; a second timer means 9 for measuring the passed time TP from power source interruption to power source re-input; and a comparing means 10 for comparing TW with TP. This device is further provided with an output means 1 for immediately operating a starting pulse generating circuit 4 with TW<=TP, as a result of comparison, and operating the starting pulse generating circuit 4 after the lapse of the time of TW-TP with TW>TP. The time required to reach the state where the high luminance discharge lamp 3 is momentarily restartable from the state at power source re-input time is self-judged on the basis of a prescribed characteristic, and according to the result, the high voltage pulse is controlled to be applied immediately or after the lapse of a prescribed time. |
