This invention concerns a current transformer (10) with a conductor forming an approximately U-shaped loop (11, 39) lying at least approximately in a single plane and through which the current to be measured flows. Located inside the loop is a coil (13) connected to an electronic electricity meter, the windings of the coil lying at least approximately parallel to the plane of the loop (11, 39). The loop (11, 39) and the coil (13) are surrounded by a sheath of magnetic conducting material which also acts as screening. In order to design and dispose the parts intended to guide the magnetic flux and act as screening so that manufacture and assembly are simple and also so that high long-term stability is ensured without the need for complex adjustments, the invention proposes that the low-retentivity sheath is formed by at least one flat laminar element (14) the plane of which is at least approximately at right angles to the plane of the loop (11, 39).
