The process for connecting two at least virtually mutually perpendicular pipe pieces (1, 2) of different diameters serves preferably for connecting ladder rungs and ladder strings consisting of stainless steel. The end of the thinner pipe piece (2) is pressed, by way of an outer-surface bore of the thicker pipe (1), against the inner wall of the latter, with the result that that pipe end of the thinner pipe (2) which extends into the bore is compressed. The essential feature is that the longitudinal extent of the compressed part of the thinner pipe (2) is limited by a change in cross-section of the same. Expediently, use can be made of a plug (4) which exhibits a conical portion (6), is introduced into that end of the thinner pipe (2) which is to be connected and is pressed, by way of the outer-surface bore of the thicker pipe (1), against the inner wall of the latter. In order to limit the penetration of the conical part into the thinner pipe (2), this is locally deformed in cross-section and, at the same time, forms a non-slip foot rest. <IMAGE>
