A method serves for composting organic substances (material for rotting), in particular refuse or domestic refuse. In the method, the material for rotting is introduced into a container (rotting box) and broken down microbially, with air being supplied. In order to improve such a method, the material for rotting is comminuted after intensive rotting and subsequently broken down again microbially in the container, with air being supplied.
