A suspension control system has a relative displacement sensor in order to detect a relative velocity between a vehicle body and a wheel, and a control system which sets a relatively high value as damping coefficient for the extension stroke of a hydraulic shock absorber, which is provided between the vehicle body and the wheel, when the magnitude of the relative velocity in the direction of the extension stroke exceeds a predetermined reference value, giving priority to the control on the basis of the absolute velocity of the vehicle body. When the magnitude of the relative velocity between the vehicle body and the wheel in the direction of the extension stroke exceeds the reference value whilst the vehicle is travelling, for example because a wheel drops into a depression, the damping coefficient for the extension stroke is set to a relatively high value, giving priority to the control on the basis of the absolute velocity. When the wheel drops into a depression, the occurrence of a complete rebound can therefore be prevented. The ride comfort is therefore improved.
