Contaminated waters are principally purified of heavy metals, uranium and other toxic metals by addition of hydroxyl ions, in particular calcium hydroxide. However, this process is highly cost intensive. In the present process, for precipitation of uranium, a concrete- or mortar-containing building rubble which arises as a waste product in the rehabilitation and can even be radioactively contaminated, after appropriate digestion of the alkalinity is contacted with the contaminated water in a defined mixing ratio. The process is applied in the rehabilitation of mining installations to purify the contaminated waters arising there.
