The invention relates to a process and a system with which high-quality microbiological inoculation material for improved crude oil production is produced at the oil reservoir in a fermentation process. In the process, the continuous supply of the nutrient medium into the fermenter is controlled by the activity of the bacteria themselves, the bacterial culture is maintained in a logarithmic growth phase, and the resulting fermentation gas is recycled to control the anaerobic conditions for nutrient medium processing. The system is accommodated in containers and consists of two nutrient medium processors for alternate operation, a field inoculation fermenter and an inoculation material storage tank, with a fermentation gas displacement line leading from the field fermenter to each of the nutrient medium processors. <IMAGE>
