The invention relates to a process for preparing finely divided metal oxide powders by spray pyrolysis of aqueous solutions of corresponding metal compounds, in which the aqueous solution of the metal compounds is first dispersed in an organic phase and the emulsion formed is then subjected to spray pyrolysis. This gives powders having particle sizes in the sub-micron range, which powders are particularly suitable for the production of high-performance ceramics.
