In known devices for controlling steering, either switching takes place between a manual and automatic mode, the driver having no direct means of intervention in automatic mode, or the control prescribes a steering torque in addition to that applied by the driver which is intended to indicate the correct course to the driver. In addition to a vehicle position-detection device (1) and a steering control device (4) which acts on a steering angle adjustment device (9), the new device contains a preselectable limiter for limiting the steering angle adjustment required by the control and a means for superimposing a steering angle adjustment requested by the control on a steering angle adjustment requested by the driver, the steering angle adjustment device setting the steering angle in accordance with this superimposition means. In this way, relatively small steering movements are handled by the control while the driver simultaneously retains his possibility of intervening for larger steering movements, e.g. for changing lane and for avoidance manoeuvres.
