There is described the recovery, by extraction, of valuable metals, for example gallium, contained in an aqueous solution, the stages of the extraction comprising the bringing of the aqueous solution into contact with a water-immiscible organic phase containing a water- insoluble substituted 8-hydroxyquinoline, the valuable metals being transferred into the organic phase, separation of the organic phase from the aqueous solution and recovery of the valuable metals from the organic phase. The novelty consists in that the valuable metals are recovered by bringing the organic phase, containing the valuable metals, into contact with a concentrated aqueous solution of a strong base, with the valuable metals passing from the organic phase into the aqueous solution and the aqueous solution, containing the recovered valuable metals, having a total hydroxide concentration of at least 4.6 moles per litre, and in subsequently isolating the valuable metals from the aqueous phase.
|
