A dietary material used to improve the health of humans and in particular animals immediately after weaning, comprising the binding of a sugar with a supporting material, both the sugar and the support material being fermentable in the gut of the animal or human, the sugar preferably being lactose and the support material preferably being substantially hemicellulose, and wherein the support material causes the sugar to resist hydrolysis in favour of fermentation. |
