A process for the production of 2-substituted-5-chlorimidazole-4-carbaldehydes of the general formula (I): <IMG> I wherein R represents hydrogen, an alkyl group, an alkenyl group, a cycloalkyl group, a benzyl group, a phenyl group or an aryl group. These compounds are important intermediates for the production of anti-hypertensive pharmaceutical agents and herbicidal compounds.
