PURPOSE:To increase the opportunities at which road surface friction coefficient is detected while an automobile is driven and improve the accuracy of road surface friction coefficient detection by obtaining road surface friction coefficient even during idling or non-idling operation of tire, if a vehicle turns, generating actual transverse acceleration. CONSTITUTION:The fact that transverse acceleration which is obtained from the relation between a slip angle and cornering force becomes a function of road surface friction coefficient is utilized. A means 5 which assumes a slip angle of wheel from output of various sensors 1, 2, 2', a means 6 which assumes cornering force from the slip angle, and a means 7 which obtains the assumed transverse acceleration from the cornering force are provided. Road surface friction coefficient is obtained by a means 8 based on the ratio of the assumed transverse acceleration obtained from the above-mentioned means to actual transverse acceleration obtained from a means 3 which detects actual transverse acceleration. |
