The invention relates to an illumination device with signal effect, which has in a housing a solar cell, an electric luminous means, an accumulator and an electronic circuit for operating the electric luminous means. The housing has a cap-shaped, in particular hemispherical, construction and consists of a transparent, UV-resistant material, preferably plastic. A sandwich structure, comprising a wiring carrier for the electronic circuit, the solar cell and the accumulator, is arranged inside the housing. A light-emitting diode (LED) is used as luminous means, which diode is arranged relative to the surface of the solar cell such that an increased reflection of the radiation emitted by the LED is achieved. The solar cell at the same time serves to thermally decouple the electronic circuit and in particular the accumulator with respect to the heat radiation acting from outside. The electronic circuit for operating the illumination device is constructed such that a maximum degree is achieved in terms of efficiency (performance) between the energy consumption and the luminous effect by means of a clocked, pulse-shaped operation of the LED. As a result of an evaluation of the voltage of the solar cells, automatic emission of a luminous signal is carried out only during darkness.
