A method of transporting crude oil in tankers or mobile equipment is described by means of which the environmental damage caused in particular by accidents is substantially reduced or avoided. To this end, the crude oil intended for transport is consolidated in its consistency in the transport vessel by the addition of solid paraffin with a suitable melting or solidification point to such an extent that it is no longer free-flowing and in the event of damage to the tanker is released only slightly and very slowly into the water. Furthermore, on account of its consistency, it is possible in a simple manner to remove the released crude-oil quantities again from the water surface.
