Retro-fittable air bag for safety belts

An air bag can now be installed in order to avoid severe injury in accidents involving vehicles. This feature is, however, limited to the driver and the passenger in the seat next to the driver and to the more recent models of vehicles. Furthermore, such fixedly mounted air bags are very expensive. Unlike current solutions, the invention makes it possible for all vehicles which have a safety belt to be retro-fitted with this system, on all seats, i.e. even on back seats. This is made possible by means of an air bag module which is mounted to the lap belt section of the safety belt. This module is connected by means of a pressure pipe to a pressure reservoir and pressure transducer. The said components are mounted in the vicinity of the seats, and in the case of back seats may also be mounted in the boot. When the vehicle decelerates to an appropriate extent an air bag with a large surface is inflated from the lap region, in front of the entire chest and head region, resting against the body before an impact occurs. The actual impact occurs on the opposite side of the air bag. The dimensions of the air bags are variable as they are not limited by assembly dimensions. The great advantage of the invention is that any vehicle which has a safety belt can be equipped with this air bag system in a cost-effective manner, without resort being made to automotive technology, all seats being included, in a car, lorry or bus.
