Honeycomb and manufacturing process for a honeycomb

Honeycombs as a catalyst support or soot filter and a manufacturing process for them are described. The honeycombs have alternately layered smooth or at least partially structured metal foils which are packed in an enveloping tube to form a stack. According to one alternative, the metal foils are wound spirally around a fixed point, being welded or soldered to one another with their surfaces bearing against one another at a fixed point and being reinforced by a strip of sheet metal or the like. In another alternative, the metal foils are arranged in an enveloping tube in two separate stacks each with an axial connecting region, the metal foils being folded into one direction and the two stacks being arranged in series in the peripheral direction. According to further embodiments, the honeycomb has two stacks of metal foils curved in opposite directions, one stack taking up one half of the cross-section of the enveloping tube, and the axial edge regions being welded or soldered between axial flanges of two enveloping-tube half-shells. As a result of the arrangements according to the invention, particularly stable honeycombs are created which are reliably secured against fatigue fracture and can be manufactured in a simple manner.
