Device for the non-mechanical treatment and processing of root canals by means of laser radiation

The methods, apparatus and devices employed in dentistry for treating and processing root canals are all mechanical in nature. In the case of manual processing of the root canal with mechanical files, the surface of the canal is coated with a smear layer which seals the fine dentine tubules with necrotic pulp tissue. In the subsequent filling, the dentine tubules and the apical foramen are thereby prevented from being sealed permanently, so that liquid or microorganisms can penetrate from the periodontal membrane into the root canal. Treatment and processing of the root canal are effected without any mechanical action using an adjustment body (1), a catheter system with mechanical branch connections, a unit (7) for irrigating and simultaneously aspirating irrigation fluid, an optical image conducting fibre (9) with individual image points and a laser light-carrying fibre (5) with connected pulsed laser radiation source (6). The device is suitable for substitution of all mechanical processing methods of root canals by means of mechanical files.
