The invention relates to an air-compressing internal combustion engine, which includes a crankshaft and an intake section with at least one air feed line and a fan for the compression of charge air, the compressed charge air being fed by way of the air feed line to an inlet side of the internal combustion engine. In order to design a simple and low-cost internal combustion engine of the generic type so that the quantity of intake air is significantly increased, especially in cold starting, it is proposed according to the invention that the fan be electrically driven and controlled in such a way that in a starting phase of the internal combustion engine compressed air is already present on the inlet side during the first revolutions of the crankshaft.
