The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for the continuous chipping of roundwood which is pushed in the longitudinal direction cyclically past a dividing element. After each feed cycle, the long-wood pack is cut to length by a pack length corresponding to the feed distance and at the same time the usable chipping length. The following features are considered to be inventive: a) the cyclical feed of the long-wood pack beyond the dividing plane (16) takes place against a moderate resistance of a plunger (20) which has been previously moved up against the front cut surface of the long-wood pack and is moved back to its starting position with the long-wood feed; b) the short-wood pack (28) is conveyed away transversely to the long-wood feed immediately after being cut to length; c) during the conveying-away out of the region of the dividing plane (16), the short-wood pack (28) is supported by one of its faces on the dividing element which remains in the dividing plane, and slides along said dividing element; d) during the conveying-away, the short-wood pack (28) is additionally guided between two supporting elements (29) bearing against its long sides, of which the supporting element which is located at the front in the feed direction of the short-wood pack (28) and at the same time forms the rear support of the short-wood pack (28) running ahead, after completion of at least one further feed cycle, is conveyed back again and ... as a rear support of a new short-wood pack (28) to be cut to length ... again at the start of the ...
