Catalytic preparation of tertiary butyl alcohol from tertiary butyl hydroperoxide and catalysts therefor.

The t-butyl hydroperoxide forming a contaminant in a charge stock whose major component is t-butyl alcohol can be converted into tertiary butyl alcohol at a high conversion rate and with high selectivity by a soluble catalyst system comprising a soluble iron compound and a soluble ruthenium compound. The charge stock can be obtained for instance by the reaction of isobutane with molecular oxygen.
