<p>PURPOSE: To provide an air bag system having a shock absorbing function effective for an occupant. CONSTITUTION: An occupant restraint system 20 comprises a folded cushion 42 having upper and lower portions 44, 46, fan folded side wall portions 72 and pleat folded end wall portions 74. A reaction plate 80 fits between the upper wall portion and the immediately adjacent distal folds of the respective side wall portions. The distal folds are clamped to the reaction plate by means of a clamping member so that initial deployment of the cushion is laterally of the upper wall portion which remains stationary. As the pressure and volume of a pressure fluid increase during the deployment of the cushion, the distal folds are pulled away from the clamping member and form continuations of the upper wall which deploys toward the occupant.</p> |
