TRANSLUCENT REFLECTION TYPE LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE

PURPOSE:To improve the black-and-white visibility of an STN translucent reflection type liquid crystal display element. CONSTITUTION:The angle of the axis of absorption of an upper polarizing plate 4 is set to 111+ or -5 deg., the angle of the axis of absorption of a translucent reflective polarizing plate 3 as a lower polarizing plate is set to 165+ or -5 deg. deviating by 45 deg. from the axis of absorption of a lower orientation film, and the angle of the axis of elongation of a phase difference plate 5 is set to 65+ or -5 deg.; and the CIE chromaticity values of a back light source 12 are so set that x=0.2939 and y=0.3135. Consequently, the chromaticity of the liquid crystal display element is made complementary with the chromaticity of the back light source and an optimum black-and-white display is made to improve the display visibility.
