The essential features of the invention consist in the fact that the top part of a tank is designed as a floating chamber, adjoining which at the bottom is a larger oil-collecting chamber which has flooding valves in the base and an oil-intake opening in a side wall directly beneath the floating chamber. During the suction of the flooded oil-collecting chamber, plunging into the body of water up to the oil-intake opening, via an intake line at the base of the oil-collecting chamber, oil contamination floating on the surface of the water is drawn by the developing suction into the oil-collecting chamber, in the course of which the oil-collecting chamber fills with oil from top to bottom. The advantages achieved with the invention essentially consist in the fact that the tank, preferably having the standardised dimensions of a container, can be easily and quickly transported to any site and can be easily and quickly used and that the apparatus according to the invention has a high suction capacity.
