A coupling system for coupling/uncoupling rail-bound vehicles is proposed, the vehicles (1, 1') being each provided with main couplings (3, 3') and intermediate doors (4, 4') and independent vehicle drives (33, 33'). On both vehicles (1, 1') safety couplings (5, 5', 52, 52') are fitted in order to provide a positively engaging connection during operating phases with the main couplings (3, 3') not closed, at least one safety coupling having means for decreasing or increasing the distance between the two vehicles under open-loop or closed-loop control. <IMAGE>
