The invention relates to an exercise mat, suitable for floor exercises or gymnastics, which comprises a plurality of layers of foamed (expanded) plastics material of different material properties. It is provided that the mat contains, underneath a top layer, for example in the form of a carpet or the like, an uppermost layer (2) of foamed and crosslinked polyethylene, in which the elongation at break in the longitudinal direction is 250-320 N/mm<2>, preferably 280 N/mm<2>, and in the transverse direction is 270-330 N/mm<2>, preferably 300 N/mm<2>, resulting in particularly flexible cell walls and an extremely high impact resilience, and, lying thereunder, an approximately equally thick layer (3) of more rigid foamed polyethylene with an elongation at break in the longitudinal direction of about 70-80 N/mm<2>, and an elongation at break in the transverse direction of about 85-90 N/mm<2> and consequently with harder cell walls and lower impact resilience and lower depth of penetration, both layers expediently consisting of the material known by the tradename "Trocellen". <IMAGE>
