A flash solid state drive compatible with ATA/IDE interface standards to be connected to a host for storing or retrieving sectors of data, where each sector contains 512 bytes of data, and each sector is addressed by a cylinder, head and sector number (CHS), and the host provides the number of sectors to be stored or retrieved and data for the sectors to be stored, and the flash solid state drive comprises a translator for translating the CHS address into a logic sector number LSN, a solid state memory for storing a header for each CHS address which can be issued by the host, an address register for maintaining a flash solid state memory address FA for each LSN, and a flash controller (21) for storing the sector received from the host as variable length sector in the flash solid state memory (27).
