<p>Straw, reeds and other graminaceous plants which have been split longitudinally and opened into strands of ribbon-like form are used in the manufacture of heat and sound insulating slabs and upholstery stuffing. In the case of straw it may first be softened with water, steam or a solution of alkali and then subjected to a compressing operation by which the stems are caused to split longitudinally, the split stems then being opened out by an apparatus such as a willower. Lighter strands may be removed by a current of air. The strands may be impregnated with glue or size, rendered waterproof or fireproof or bonded with portland, magnesion or other cements.</p> |
