EXTINGUISHING FIRES IN CONFINED SPACES

Fires in confined spaces containing combustible liquids are extinguished by injecting a mixture of water (24), a foam-forming concentrate (23) and an inert gas (29) into the tank (12) at a point below the surface (53) of the stored liquid (41) to form an upwelling foam column (54) which explodes upon the liquid surface and spreads across that surface to extinguish the fire and prevent its reignition.
