Old used vehicle tyres are disintegrated by centring them between two rims, rotating, removing rubber from the tyre surface by rotating roughening or peeling tools which are adjustable vertically and which can be moved through a curved path in a horizontal plane, and separating the rest of the tread by means of cutters which are positioned each side of the tyre at the same height and which can be moved axially; finally the side walls are removed from the bead rings at the bead height. PROCESS - The tyre is mounted on aligned shafts and a precision rim is applied to each side to hold the tyre. One such rim is driven. A roller is also driven and is adjusted in height to engage the tyre tread once the tyre has been inflated. Hydraulic cylinders move cutters individually or together to/from the tyre. ADVANTAGE - The procedure recovers some 60 - 80% of the rubber. It can be applied to used tyres of the most varied sizes
