When hanging up pictures, for example, very precise mounting of the conventional triangular hanging members is required in order that the picture does not hang crooked. A correction is possible only by re-mounting. In the case of hangers having a trapezoidal hanging member, correction of the picture so that it hangs square is possible, but the arrangement is aesthetically unsatisfactory since the hanging member is not seated centrally on the wall hook. The new hanger is to have a lateral-adjustment facility which is not visible. Adjustment is possible by virtue of the fact that the hanging member (3) is no longer rigidly connected to the fastening plate (1) but is displaceable in the longitudinal direction on it, this being concealed to the observer by the picture frame (5). It is also possible to lock the hanging member into place in various pulled-out positions owing to a toothed engagement with the fastening plate.
