The invention relates to hydroxycarboxylic acid derivatives of the general formula I in which R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an acyl group having not more than 16 carbon atoms, R2 and R3 denote in each case alkyl groups having not more than 8 carbon atoms or together denote an alkylene group having 4 to 8 carbon atoms which is optionally interrupted by an oxygen atom or a nitrogen atom and n stands for the numbers 7 to 18, with the proviso that it does not denote the number 10 if R2 and R3 in each case denote an ethyl group or in each case denote a n-butyl group and that it does not denote the number 15 if R2 and R3 in each case represent a methyl group.
