DC arc furnaces (8) have a current regulator (14) for keeping the current of an arc (10) constant, and an electrode regulator (18) for influencing the position of an electrode (7) of the arc furnace (8), and hence the length of an arc (10). The position of the electrode (7) is regulated by means of a hydraulic electrode adjusting device (21), which is regulated as a function of the difference between an electrode regulator reference variable signal ( alpha des), which can be predetermined, and a rectifier control variable signal ( alpha act) at the output of the current regulator (14). In consequence, the arc length is regulated such that a rectifier (5) operates on average with a firing-angle setting of, for example, 25 DEG electrical, irrespective of the secondary voltage of a furnace transformer (2) and of a set desired current value signal (ides). Limit values are monitored, and undesired frequencies filtered out, by means of a bandpass filter (16) between the output of the current regulator (14) and a comparator or adder (17) for forming the difference signal between the electrode regulator reference variable signal ( alpha des) and the rectifier control variable signal ( alpha act).

|
