PURPOSE:To enable the display of constant sheet separating performance to both OHP sheets and ordinary sheets by the surface shape of a pad member in a sheet separating device formed of the combination of a retarding member and a feed roller. CONSTITUTION:A pad member 2p disposed at a retarding member is formed by combining protrusions 22 of width D with recessed grooves 23 of width C, and the protrusions 22 are disposed being inclined by an angle theta in relation to the conveyed direction of sheets. The protrusions 22 are formed in the state of the recessed grooves 23 being cut in by the specified depth H from the surface of a plate member formed of silicone rubber or the like, and it is so formed that a friction coefficient to OHP sheets and a friction coefficient to ordinary sheets can be maintained to the constant value over a long period of time.
