PRODUCTION OF BIARYL COMPOUND

PURPOSE:To easily produce various biaryl compounds having functional groups including biaryl derivatives which are liquid crystal compounds useful as displaying materials. CONSTITUTION:A biaryl compound expressed by the formula Ar-Ar' is produced by reacting a chlorosilyl-substituted aromatic compound expressed by the formula Ar-SimCl3-m with an aromatic compound expressed by the formula Y-Ar' in the presence of a group X transition metal catalyst, a ligand and a fluoride ion source. In these formulas, Ar and Ar' are substituted or unsubstituted aromatic group or heteroaromatic group; R is alkyl or Ar; Y is eliminable group; and (m) is 0, 1 or 2.
